PROGRAM SHAFT ANALYTICS

PROGRAM SHAFTS have a unique design based on the Golden Section geometric relationship. According to Daniel You, the genius behind shaft design at Matrix, the classic symmetry of the Golden Section offers an intriguing possibility for exploring how a fundamental relationship in nature might be applied to the structure and performance of a golf shaft. It certainly intrigued us at JTClubs, and we put the R flex into a new set of irons for play at our favorite course. Fabulous.

Program shafts are offered in three weights (80 g, 95 g, 130 g) and three flexes in the 80 g and 95 g lines. Here is a look at the EI profiles of three Program 95 shafts. This shaft is designed for moderately high spin and launch with stiffness changes distributed evenly through the length of the shaft that's seldom found in steel shafts. It has a firm but comfortable feel without the harshness of steel.

The similarity in tip stiffness between R-flex, S-flex, and X-flex shafts is noteworthy compared to the exaggerated variation in flex near the grip end of the shaft. Players with a high enough swing speed who are capable of handling the firm feel of the S-flex and X-flex may find the tip to be unexpectedly responsive and able to help launch the ball high.

The stiffness difference between R-flex and S-flex is among the greatest we have seen among all brands we have tested. The S-flex and X-flex were relatively similar in stiffness throughout the length of the shaft in our testing. The X-flex feels like a heavier version of the S-flex and may appeal only to the strongest hitters.

Overall, we like the Program 95 but it's not for the faint of heart. However, for those players who can deliver full power to the shaft will be rewarded with tight dispersion patterns and an accuracy that can equal or exceed steel.

The Golden Section is an aesthetically pleasing ratio recognized and studied for more than 2000 years. For any straight line divided into two unequal segments, the Golden Section describes a simple ratio: the ratio of the length of the whole line to the length of the large segment is the same as the ratio of the length of the large segment to that of the small segment. It's true for lines of any length, and yields a number equal to 1.161.... that defines the ratio.

Structures having the proportions of the Golden Section are found in nature in many forms. The ratio has been applied to man-made structures as a way of controlling stress on supporting structures under the strain of a dynamic load.

The Golden Section is an innovative application of a fundamental relationship in nature to shaft design that's unique to the Program shaft series. It offers performance benefits that should definitely be tested by players with a strong swing looking for the benefits of graphite feel and responsiveness with improvements in accuracy and shot dispersion.
